NameThatPlant.net: Troubleshooting

Safari, when used on Apple mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad or the iPod Touch, sometimes breaks NameThatPlant's back button.
It may help to hit the back button again.
If that doesn't work, apparently the only workarounds are to Search again or switch to another browser.

1) Hearing: Are you hearing voices?

Throughout NameThatPlant's plant detail pages, clicking this button

will allow you to hear the adjacent Latin name pronounced.

If you don't hear anything, check to make sure that you have speakers* that are connected properly,
and that the volume is turned up on both computer and speakers.

If you still don't hear voices, make sure that you have FlashPlayer installed (not available for iPhones or iPads).
This software is available free from Adobe, and it allows your browser to play the MP3 files that deliver NameThatPlant's voices.

To see if you have FlashPlayer and what version it is, go to

On that page is a link to the FlashPlayer Download Center, where you can obtain the latest version —
or, if its system requirements are too steep, click "different operating system or browser" and download an older version.

(NameThatPlant's sound files should play on FlashPlayer version 8 or newer.)

*Most Macs have built-in speakers; on Windows machines they are optional equipment.


2) Seeing: Are you seeing the details?

Clicking a thumbnail image will open a larger picture.
If nothing happens when you click, go to your browser's preferences and enable JavaScript.

3) Mapping: Can you get there from here?

A new window — or a new tab — will open. (Depending on your browser's settings, it may not be in front.) There will be a moment when it looks like nothing is happening....
